"Lack of weekend x-ray facilities in Angus"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Whitehills Health & Community Care Centre / Minor Injuries Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre / X-rays and Scans

(as a relative),

My mother, in her 90's,  suffered a fall in her bedroom late one Friday evening which resulted in a very painful wrist; the care staff where she lives contacted 111 and were told help would be coming. We were later informed, after 4hrs wait, that this was cancelled and someone from Whitehills would be in touch in the morning. Whitehills phoned & asked her to attend that morning which she did. We fully expected an X-ray of her wrist but were very disappointed to learn no x-rays are done at weekends at Forfar or Arbroath.

The question I would like to raise is why can't one of these MIUs carry out x-rays on Saturdays and Sundays? Perhaps on a rotational basis, which I'm sure would be beneficial to many people.

Hi Rudy,

I'm so sorry to learn of your mother's fall and I hope she is doing much better. This sounds like a worrying time for you all.

I see a call was made to NHS 24 on 111 in which it appears we requested onward care for your mother. If you feel it would be helpful, we would be pleased to review the contact us to assure ourselves this was managed as it should have been. Our Patient Experience Team can be contacted at patient.experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Your question in relation to the provision of x-rays is best responded to by NHS Tayside. I see they are tagged to your story.

Once again, I wish your mother well.

Kind regards

Shona

Thank you for your response. My main intention was (and still is) to highlight the lack of x-ray availability at weekends in Angus.

Kind regards

Dear Rudypx24,

Thanks for taking the time to highlight the lack of Imaging services in Angus at the weekend.

We have nether ran weekend Imaging services in the Angus region, but have invested in equipment and staffing for improvements in radiology weekday services.

I understand the benefits of local services, but this has to balanced against monies available, trained staff, patient activity and services offered. Within Imaging we do provide significant weekend cover at both Ninewells and Perth and are looking at how we improve access at weekends for Out patients.

There are no plans to increase service provision in the MIUs in Angus, but will continue to improve the service offering across Tayside.

Kind Regards

Mike

Dear Rudypx24,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on care opinion. I'm very sorry to hear of your mothers recent visit to MIU following a fall where she injured her wrist. I hope she is on the mend and feeling better.

I am sorry to hear you felt let down by lack of x-ray service in Angus at the weekend. The provision of x-ray is a different service from MIU and I can see my colleague from Imaging has addressed this.

Thank you again for sharing your story, all feedback is appreciated.

Take care,

Kind regards

Katy Cook ( Senior Staff Nurse, Arbroath MIU, NHS Tayside).
