"Poor standard of medicine"

About: Family Doctors

As a retired physician, I would expect a minimum standard of care. There has been a rapid turnover of medical staff at the surgery. The last doctor I saw was competent and thorough (i.e.: knew how to examine a patient). She has subsequently left. I developed type II diabetes discovered on a routine blood test. Unfortunately the surgery did not inform me of this. I contracted oral candidiasis with dysphagia and was seen by an "advanced medical practitioner" who failed to notice diabetes, told me I had a mass in my neck and that he thought I had cancer. (The mass was my arytenoid cartilage). I was referred to the local hospital where I was immediately diagnosed by an ENT surgeon. Having been referred on "cancer pathway", I had numerous other tests which were normal. I have not been seen by a doctor about my diabetes, the last practitioner was a pharmacist.

I have developed frontal sinusitis and was unable to see a doctor for 3 weeks. Finally, I saw a GP privately and I was relieved to speak to someone who knew what they were doing.

The surgery has an increasingly poor reputation and the dependence on non-medical support staff and a succession of locums will inevitably lead to a decline in medical care for the community.
