I was given medication, an antibiotic from the gynaecologist unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hosptal, for a urine infection.
I took the antibiotic in my car, and in less than 5 minutes, I was aware I was having a full anaphylactic shock!
I was driving on the motorway on the M8, I dialled 999, I managed to come off at the next exit. I was found slumped in my car, was then rushed, blue light and siren back to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where I spent the night.
Thankfully the paramedics and the staff in the A&E department looked after me, and I am here to tell the tale. But who knows what would have happened if I wasn’t so quick in realising I was having an anaphylactic shock, I would probably have killed someone, crashing my car, as I passed out just after I was parked at the car park in Govan.
This was negligent of the staff member who prescribed my antibiotic, as I had specifically said I hope it’s not the antibiotic I am allergic to. This was listed in my medical records!
So I am eternally thankful to the paramedics and the staff in A&E.
"Prescribed medication that could have killed me"
