"Our little Angel's Birth Story"

About: Gynaecology / Obstetric & Gynaecology Ultrasound Maternity care / Labour Suite Maternity care / Maternity Assessment Unit Ninewells Hospital / Neonatology

(as a service user),

At the 20 weeks scan, myself and my boyfriend got the news that every parent-to-be dreads. There was an issue found on the babies brain at the scan. On further scans another issue was found. The next 7 weeks were filled with appointments with various consultants.

Each consultant we met with, treated us with so much dignity and humility, understanding our anxieties and working to find our answers. A special thanks to our lead consultant, Dr Nicoll and our screening midwife Jordan, who were so kind and caring towards us in every stage of the pregnancy journey. Earlier this month, we attended the tulip suite on the labour suite where we gave birth to our beautiful angel baby at 12 weeks 1 day. Each midwife on each shift looking after us (Charlotte, Sophie, Sasha, Sarah, Gillian) and every other midwife/nurse/doctor/HCA looking after us were unbelievable. They were the kindest, most amazing people who took so much time to learn about us as a family, ensuring we were comfortable each step of the way. Each midwife clearly had a thorough handover, passing on fine details about us to ensure we received the best care.

We were so touched by each and every person we met. A special thank you to Sasha, who supported the delivery of our gorgeous little girl and followed our wishes perfectly. We were allowed to stay in the tulip suite an extra night to spend time with our little girl and felt so comfortable in the hospital. This was a heart-breaking experience for us, however we will forever be grateful for the care we received from the start to finish of our journey. From the bottom of our hearts we want to thank the amazing staff for everything.

Dear eaterpm94

Please accept my sincerest sympathies on the birth of your angel baby.

Thank you for sharing such warm and heartfelt feedback with us at what I can hear was a heartbreaking time for you and your boyfriend.

I am exceptionally proud to read that at a time filled with such grief, heartbreak and sadness the care provided to you by all of our staff made a real positive difference for you both.

It takes real strength of character to think of others when you are experiencing such heartbreak and I can only imagine how difficult the birth of your daughter has been for you and your boyfriend. I hope you are recovering physically from the birth and taking time to process events leading up to this. I hope the memories of your angel baby, and that extra time you were given to spend with her bring you comfort as you navigate the grief that this will undoubtedly bring. I can hear this was very important to you.

It will be an absolute honor to share this feedback with our midwifery teams and I am sure this will be met with heartfelt appreciation on their behalf.

I cannot thank you enough on behalf of all of our teams for taking time to share this. This type of feedback is so special and treasured by our teams and is a true reflection of the kindness and compassion with which they all approach their jobs.

I believe wholeheartedly for any other woman who has, or who may experience similar your story will also give them strength and courage at a time when it is difficult to look forward. I feel very privileged that you have trusted that you can share your story so openly with us and know that this will help so many other families find the words to share their own experiences. Thank you!

Warm regards,

Lee-Anne Abel, Senior Midwife.
