"The care has been outstanding"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

We were brought in on Monday by ambulance, 10 hours later sent home but my son still struggling to breathe and still with all the same symptoms. Tuesday we came back in after unable to feed due to breathlessness, no wet nappies and still struggling to breathe (all the same symptoms). He was put on oxygen and a feeding tube for 3 days. In those 3 days the care has been outstanding and I cannot fault a thing. The staff have been everything and more.

I don't think we should've been sent home on the Monday with still very obvious signs of struggling to breathe (sucking in at the ribs, neck, nose flare). We had to come back and my son didn't wake for 28 hours from being so exhausted.

Good evening!

Such lovely feedback! Thank you so much for your time in sharing your positive experiences about you and your son’s stay with us on the paediatric ward.

I very much appreciate your son’s illness would have been very distressing for you, especially when his breathing wasn’t improving initially needing a further review - so I am delighted the care you received from our staff colleagues during your stay over the 3 days was outstanding and we were able to support all you and your son’s needs. I hope your son is now fully recovered from his illness.

I am sorry to hear you felt your son experienced an early discharge in the first instance. We would very much welcome a conversation with you to explore and understand more about your son’s discharge so we can learn how to improve our service going forward. Should you wish to discuss your son's discharge with us in more detail please email Caroline Jackson, our Children’s Unit Matron, on Caroline.Jackson@SomersetFT.nhs.uk.

I will pass your feedback onto everyone who looked after you and your son and with the whole Paediatric Unit. I know everyone will be extremely pleased to hear while you stayed with us you experienced brilliant care which we always aim to provide for all our patients and families.

Thank you again and we very much appreciate your feedback.

Kindest regards

Dr Holly

Dear Angmk34

I am writing to you to update you on your feedback you kindly shared with us.

I have shared your feedback with our Matron and Clinical Medical leads. They were extremely pleased you experienced outstanding care and were supported so well during your stay with us.

I have also shared your feedback, including with all our staff colleagues on the Children’s unit, about your son’s early discharge. Your feedback highlighted and has actively enhanced ongoing discussions that we have with all our colleagues involved in discharging children and young people. We are leading a piece of work around further encouraging the importance of listening to parents and carers about how their child is doing and whether there has been any change. Our unit has been actively involved with the SPOT pilot programme, integrating a standardised observation system into our daily cares. It actively incorporates the thoughts and opinions of parents and carers on how their children are to inform, and on concern, drive escalation of medical reviews. This will also very much help inform our decisions about discharge planning, and importantly will encompass parent and carer opinions about how ready their children are for a safe discharge home.

Thank you again for your feedback, it is hugely appreciated and beneficial. Your feedback provides such valuable learning to help us continue to provide the very best of care for our children, young people and families.

Yours sincerely

Dr Holly
