"Adult Learning Disability Breast Screening support"

About: Adult Disability Services / Health Facilitation Service Southern Health & Social Care Trust / Breast Screening Service

(as a carer),

My sister has learning and sensory disabilities and is usually anxious about any medical appointments. As her carer I try to support her to address her health needs but have often had to take her away from appointments when staff are unable to complete procedures due to her anxiety, for example taking bloods. Following previous attempts to carry out a mammogram I was reluctant take her back to screening as I didn't believe it was possible and didn't want to cause her stress. Then we were introduced to the ALD Breast Screening Project Lead Nurse, Lauren, and began an eight month process involving several home visits and three breast screening appointments at the Glenanne Clinic in Craigavon Area Hospital.

Lauren spent lots of time getting to know my sister, explaining the importance of breast screening, self-checks and the process of carrying out a mammogram. She provided easy access and clear information including sensory aids and easy read booklets. While my sister is still unable to complete the mammogram process, due to the nature of the machine and her inability to follow the very specific physical requirements, she has been checked as well as possible for now and will be supported to self-check at home on a regular basis and, most importantly, is willing to continue to attend and attempt the procedure. I am also more committed to taking her to the clinic having been so well supported in recent months.

My main point in writing this story is to highlight what a wonderful service has been provided through this one-year project and the great skills of Nurse Lauren. I also want to argue for a continuation of the work that has been started, and only scratched the surface in my view. The process my sister had with Lauren was excellent and I think, with more time allowed, could make even better progress, for her and for other women with a learning disability. The expertise gained by the nurse, in this case Lauren, should not be lost, increasing the risk of some women (with a learning disability) being unable to have their health checks carried out equally effectively to their peers. As a carer I think it is vital to have the additional support to help my family member attend what can be a stressful situation for both of us.

Thank You Lauren
