"Reassurance scan"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Maternity care North Devon District Hospital / Radiology (X-ray)

(as a service user),

I arrived for a reassurance scan that was booked for me by the doctor. I had been seen at the day assessment unit after a fall. The radiologist who scanned me came out before my scan and went behind reception, they proceeded to talk about my case loud enough for me to hear in the waiting area and their tone of voice made it sound as if they didn’t think I should be there.

The radiologist proceeded to call me into the ultrasound room and their attitude and tone of voice came across very rude and as if I was wasting their time. I saw my baby for about 3 minutes, I understand how under pressure the NHS is but the sole purpose of this scan was to check baby was okay and reassure me. I left knowing baby was fine but I left feeling like I’d wasted time by being anxious and that I didn’t deserve to be there.

The radiologist made me feel very rushed and barely looked at me. Prior to this scan I was absolutely amazed at the treatment I had received after my fall by my midwife Heather and the Bideford community team in particular, the lady that came out with the Doppler and the lady that called me to book the appointment made me feel listened to and validated my feelings. Also the lady at the day assessment unit who took mine and my partner's feelings into consideration and took time in making sure I felt reassured that baby was okay.

I am a Diagnostic Radiographer with many years experience of working, and imaging patients, in all areas of the Radiology department. I am also responsible for the governance in Radiology and so make sure that we are compliant with the many ionising radiation regulations that dictate what we can and can't do in radiology, keep the patients and staff safe and ensure we are practicing safely. I also deal with our policies and procedures and oversee compliments, complaints and quality.

Dear librayw73,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback following your reassurance scan, I'm sorry to hear that you had such a worrying time in your pregnancy after your fall and also that your experience of our service was not of the high standard that we would expect.

It would be really helpful if you could let me have a few more details, if you feel that you would like to, so that I can follow this up properly at this end. If you would like to contact me separately my email address is: gillian.kite@nhs.net.

If you would rather not give more details then I completely understand, in which case please accept my sincere apologies for your experience, it is absolutely not the level of care and professionalism we expect from our staff, or the way in which we expect our patients to be treated or made to feel during their appointments with us.

I will be speaking to the Ultrasound Lead Sonographer today about your experience so that she can discuss this further with her team.

I'm so pleased that your baby was ok and that you were ultimately reassured.

Kind regards

Gill
