"Treatment for a child."

About: Victoria Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Last week my child become unwell a few days after his surgery. After seeing our local GP he reluctantly told us to go up to the children's ward at the VHK. I was a bit worried at his fluid and food intake. Also on-top of that his medication.

After receiving some treatment my little boy did perk up ever so slightly but the speciality consultant was not happy with us going home. Due to my little ones urine output, lack of fluids and medication intake.

The plan was for a cannula and IV fluids to be given and checked the next day. Two attempts were made for my little ones cannula but as the doctor was adult trained she struggled. I was made aware that the paediatric doctors would come and attempt once we were given a bed. This being said late evening.

We got given a bed several hours later in the early morning and then to be told they have decided to leave the attempt for another cannula until the morning.

Speciality Doctor come round to see how my little boy was. He was really understanding and listened to what i had to say. Had a look at my little boy who still needed IV Fluids and now needed IV Antibiotics. Doctor wasn’t happy cannula was still not in.

Another Two attempts been made at getting a Cannula into my little boy and the speciality doctor asked if paediatrics could give an attempt as they were struggling. This is when i was very disappointed.

For the speciality doctor to ask nursing staff if a paediatric doctor could give it an attempt. For them to refuse and say he’s not under us. He’s in your speciality. For to be so unprofessional and argue in a corridor. Outside the bay for others to hear and my husband to walk into the ward with that. He knew straight away who they were on about.

The speciality doctors asking for help to cannulate a child in a children’s ward. For them to refuse. I know how short staffed wards are. I know how hard they are all working but my child needed help and i found it to be very unprofessional.
