"You're all more amazing than you will ever know"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Critical Care Unit (ICU/HDU) The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

To begin I was admitted to Ward 56 GRI back in October with  a serious infection. After numerous test and scans it was discovered i needed surgery for hysterectomy and also to remove quite a big abscess growing very close to my bowel, so close that i also needed bowel surgery. My operation was all planned for November so in the meantime i needed I.V antibiotics daily to try help with infection.

I went for my surgery then into I.C.U for a day then back to ward 56, within a week i took seriously ill and a C.T confirmed my bowel, which previously had surgery on it was leaking thus causing sepsis so I was rushed straight back to theatre. I woke in I.C.U again and also found I also now had a stoma bag as it was needed to more or less save me. So after I think another day or so I went back to ward 56 again. Ward 56 is a gyn ward but because of the service and care I received from everyone on that ward, from nurse in charge Julie to all surgeons, nurses, auxilliaries, phlebotomists, doctors, stoma team and domestics, I couldn't have asked for a more caring, supportive team of people taking care of me and that's where I wanted to be.

I was in a very bad way physically, emotionally and mentally and the people on this ward could not have helped me more even if they tried. They became my 2nd family, they weren't just treating me like a patient, I was treated and felt like every one of them cared about me getting well, cared about me when I was scared, frustrated, at a low, in tears and when I just needed to offload.

In reality, I should have been in a surgical ward but I begged to stay in 56 not because the other wards were bad but because all of these people were 2nd to none, they were amazing with all of my visitors and especially my family, they were always friendly and highly helpful.

On my day of discharge believe it or not as much as I don't like hospitals (who does?) I was devastated to be leaving my 2nd family, I was in bits and was so sad I couldn't get to say thank you and goodbye to every single person who looked after me.

I've already said the ladies on that ward are my NHS angels and I could never repay how I was cared for.

So I want it to be known how amazing these people are, I will never ever forget every single one of them and all of their care and support to get me from practically the brink of death to be walking back out of the hospital in time to spend xmas with my family.

Thank you so very very very much to every single member of staff on ward 56, you're all more amazing than you will ever know.

Dear avoceter35

Thank you for finding the time to send such lovely feedback during what sounds like a difficult time emotionally and physically.

Our SCN Julie and her team will be delighted that you felt supported by the surgeons, nurses, HCSW, phlebotomists, stoma team, doctors and domestics and you felt they were your NHS angels who helped you get home in time for Christmas with your family.

I will share this feedback with our Ward 56 team.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,

Nikki Harvey

Interim Lead Nurse Gynaecology/ACS
