I had been having the same excruciating pain under my right breast that linked to a dull pain in my back. This was accompanied by vomiting bile and the inability to keep even water down. The first GP appointment was by phone, they were dismissive, told me I was too large and probably constipated. They did not ask questions and put the phone down before I could respond.
The second was also a phone consultation. I was told as I have fibromyalgia it was probably IBS so buy some Buscopan. Again, dismissive and no time for me to add any thing.
The third appointment was a little better, but still a phone consultation, when I was told it was acid reflux from the medications I was already on, and was described omazrapol, which worked for a while. Not one GP asked me questions or asked me to come in for a face to face appointment.
Then one day the agonising pain was back and was sent home from work. It was too late to get a GP appointment which is what 111 advised I do. The pain lasted about 30 hours.
The week after the pain was back again I could not hold even water down and ached from vomiting bile. I collapsed at work in agony. I was taken to A&E.
The short version was I had a large gall stone stuck in the bile duct, it has caused pancreatitis, an inflamed liver and an 'angry ' gall bladder that I was told was close to bursting. I was seriously dehydrated. I spent 5 days in hospital, on saline and double doses of intravenous antibiotics. The first night I was moved from where I was to be closer to theatre in case an emergency op was needed. The staff were amazing, hard working but always with a smile, answering my questions and being positive and helpful. But due to other patients on the ward ( I know hospitals are not 5 star hotels ) the stay was a nightmare.
I strongly feel that if one of the three GP's I had explained my symptoms to had shown due diligence, asked the correct questions of me, invited me for a face to face examination, the gall stones would have been identified and I would have adapted my life style accordingly, and maybe , it would not have resulted in such a painful stay in hospital. I now know that the what I described was classic gall stone symptoms.
How could three GP's have missed this ?
