In the early hours of the morning I was in labour.
I called triage and headed for Wishaw General Hospital.
The journey took around 25 mins. By the time I arrived I was in full on labour (quickly). My partner pulled into a space in a thankfully empty car park. He got out of the car, came around to the passenger door to help me out of the car. As I was trying to get out of the seat with his help, I had a lot of pressure and the overwhelming urge to push.
With this my water burst and felt like it had exploded everywhere! I was clearly (but unaware) making a lot of noise and remember hearing someone shout over asking if we were okay.
My partner told them we are just in labour, at which point I realised the baby's head had come out and I was actually giving birth right there at the car door in the car park.
I told my partner the baby's head is out and feeling this bulge in my leggings.
Suddenly the full baby was out and I was panicked and telling my partner this. He said, no it can't be until a wee cry came from my leggings.
And all of a sudden the lady appeared at the car. A midwife on her break time! Carol.
She immediately reassured me that everything would be okay, was on the phone to get people outside to the car, and got me sat back down, baby to chest and my partners jacket to wrap around the baby.
I literally couldn't believe what was going on! But I am so glad that by pure chance she was there. Within moments there were others at the car with towels etc. Carol clamped and cut the cord at the car, then organised me to get taken inside and to the labour ward.
She came to see me once she had changed her clothes and had her coffee.
I had been pretty insistent that I wanted to go back to Wishaw General to give birth to my now little girl who is my second baby, as the care I received with my first baby was great. And again this time, the midwives and staff on the ward were equally as amazing.
(Logistically I was closer to Glasgow royal infirmary or forth valley)
However, Carol..... you are my car park hero! I will never forget this night and will never forget you helping the way you did. You made me and my partner feel safe in what was a pretty dramatic experience for us both.
I still can't quite believe it even now as I relay this birth story. I thought this was worth a mention on here.
