"Terrible staff communication and knowledge of severely disabled adult"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has been waiting for a CT scan plus colonoscopy . He received a phone call from a consultant  . Saying his procedure would be done as a in patient because of the great level of his disability . A week or so later he gets an appointment for early December with a bottle of laxatives . My son phoned to informed them that he had no bowel control which was one of the reasons he was meant to  be done as a in patient . This appointment was cancelled and he was told they would do the procedure without a laxative . Given my son has a mega colon I have no idea  how this could be achieved

Today he received his second appointment for a weeks time . Having experienced the woeful service provided to severely disabled in NHS . Grampian and the total lack of communication . I suggested he phone and ask if they are aware he needs hoisted . No great surprise he was told they were totally unaware of his disability.  And  as he needed a  hoisted this would take longer  . So the appointment was again  cancelled.

His family has a history of cancer and any male and female relatives have been scanned as a proactive way to try to find any abnormalities. . Yet because of lack of information my son is yet again waiting  This is totally unacceptable and a shocking reflection on how the severely disabled in Aberdeen are being treated .  At the initial phone call he was told he would be done as an inpatient. And anyone could see this is what should have been done. It causing great stress to my son with these constant cancellation . And he is still in great pain .

Good Morning,

Thank you for getting in touch, I am so sorry to read of your recent experience with the health service and understand this must have been very frustrating. I sincerely apologise for your experience.

I would like to investigate this further. Can you or your son please send an email to karen.donald5@nhs.scot along with your son's full name and DOB and I will be in touch?

Many thanks

Karen
