Throughout 2023, I have made multiple visits to the CIU at PRI for drug infusions. During that time, I have found, without exception, the staff to be exceptionally efficient, kind, considerate and accommodating. They are always ready with a smile and pleasant words, not only to myself but to each and every patient. I would like to commend the entire team.
There is one area of concern that I feel should be raised. During the year the CIU was moved from its original location on the 3rd floor to its current position outside A&E. I assume this move was done for good reasons, but I can report that it has not been well received by either staff or patients. The location seems to be universally disliked, by patients having to follow a complicated and tortuous route to get there, especially difficult for those of us with mobility problems. From the staff viewpoint, they have to work around facilities which are less flexible, less private and far from ideal (for example no disabled WC). The temperature and air control systems are poor, leading to discomfort for both staff and patients. I have experienced both excessive temperatures at one extreme and uncomfortably chilly draughts at the other.
I have heard several people also comment that they miss the view, a seemingly trivial point, but when you are anchored in a chair for several hours at a time, connection with the outdoors is welcome.
That aside, I must reiterate that the team are first rate, carrying on with their excellent work despite the shortcomings of the facilities. I was tempted to make special note of certain individuals, but feel that this would be unfair to others who form an integral part of the team.
