I had been really struggling with the severe impact of carpal tunnel syndrome. The pain was not managed at all and I really didn't want too strong a medication. My dexterity had become so poor. It got to the stage I couldn't lift my 2yr old, get her in and out of car seats, change her nappy, drive, work, walk my dogs on lead or enjoy a cuddle with my children. I was becoming so low in my mood and felt hopeless as well as helpless. Painkillers and physio had gone some way to help my left hand but my right hand seen no improvement.
I was offered the chance to have Carpal Tunnel Surgery to relieve my symptoms (and misery) by NHS Forth Valley Orthopaedics. Dr Putti was straight with me and managed my expectations of the outcome that was most likely. He advised that I would certainly feel the pins and needles sensation improve- and hopefully go altogether. But although there would be improved pain relief I would likely have some level of pain management to contend with and that to continue the physio exercises I had been given as a way of rehab. He also clearly explained the recovery period and what to expect (Do's and Don'ts to optimise recovery). With this info I decided it best to go with one hand having surgery. The team present included Miss Jenkins and Miss Hamilton. They were great at putting me at ease and the surgery was fairly quick. They talked with me throughout so I din't feel talked about and felt included in my care. Even although I just sat there. I am best part of a year since the procedure but the relief I have from it is fantastic! I do still have some pain and strength problems but the pain is far better managed and my left hand continues to benefit from me doing regular physio advised exercises and taking the medicine prescribed. I am extremely grateful for the improvements post surgery and the care I received.
