"Not sensitive to my pain"

About: St John's Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the ENT ward at St John's Hospital in Livingston last year. I had tonsillitis which resulted in a quincy.

It was a very traumatic experience for me because when I was 10 I had cancer. Many of the bad memories all came back and so I was very sensitive throughout my stay.

Because of my tonsillitis and quincy, I could not swallow and so I had to stop my meds for a while. This led me to have epileptic fits again, losing consciousness. The ENT staff stated that they are not specialised in neurology and simple did very little to accommodate my needs, only when told, in fact.

They were rude to me and not sensitive to my pain at all. I deserve better, we deserve better. I am aware they may have been understaffed and overworked but that is not a justification.

Dear Scott574 I am sorry to read of your experience whilst you were an in patient within the ENT ward at St John's Hospital. What you describe is not the care that we hope to provide to patients and I apologise for the distress and upset this caused you at that time. I will share your comments with all the staff both medical and nursing so that they are aware of how their interactions were received and hope that going forward in sharing this experience, the staff will be more sensitive to a patients individual needs and concerns. If you wish to discuss this matter further then please make contact with me on 01506 523849.
