Referred for issues with knee to a consultant at Western Isles Hospital - in between referral and consultation, I had returned to GP to talk through discomfort and weakness in hip area.
I was asked by the consultant what my problem was and as soon as I referred to issues with knees and hips was asked if I had problem accepting ageing process. Then cursory examination of knees and hips as I sat in chair. Sent for x-ray of hips/pelvic area. Commented to radiologist that while I really was glad of examination of those areas, referral had been specifically for knee. Also noted that form referred to weight loss, although I said I was not aware of such but had lost appetite over previous few days as rather anxious about increasing discomfort in joints.
Returned to consulting room and first asked what was meant by question re ageing since I felt that the inference was that I was not being realistic about the inevitable effects of ageing. Then reminded consultant that referral had been specifically for knee. The consultant then reached for letter of referral and I was returned to x-ray room. Despite being told earlier that I did not experience weight loss, was told that I would have had such! No guidance given on whether knee or hip should be treated first. Just told of choice being dependent on pain level versus what they called tragic consequences. When asked to clarify, referred to variety of risks, with amputation the last identified.
I found the consultant's manner generally off hand, patronising and arrogant, and certainly I did not feel I had been clearly advised re prioritising issues despite their parting statement that now I had had a proper consultation - whatever that meant. Discussed my concerns with GP and indicated that I had no faith in this consultant, however successful their record in joint replacement. It seems this consultant does not like being questioned/challenged.
