"I was made to feel like I was causing a problem by being there"

About: Thomas Walker Surgery

(as the patient),

I have been concerned about my medical issue for quite a while. I finally managed to organise an appointment with someone from my GP surgery after trying for a couple of weeks. I was able to pre-book this appointment. My confirmation text stated the appointment was at my GP surgery.

After racing down there after work I was informed by a member of staff that it was supposed to be a phone call appointment. I showed them my confirmation text, which they barely glanced at. They then went and spoke to someone about this. They then came back to me and said to wait to be seen but they couldn't tell me how long I'd be waiting as I wasn't supposed to be there in person.

A little while later I was called in to be seen. The nurse (I think that was who I saw) asked me a few questions and told me it was probably peri-menopause. They offered me some pills to stop the issue or HRT if I preferred. I accepted the pills and left.

My problem was that I raced there for an appointment that was supposed to be an over the phone appointment. Surely the confirmation text should specify whether it's a face to face or a phone call appointment.

I am also disheartened by the way that I was made to feel like I was causing a problem by being there. I also feel that my worrying about my issue could have been met with some empathy rather than making me feel I wasted my time speaking to someone about it.

I understand the NHS are busy but I now feel like if I get ill again I won't bother the GP. I can also see why people go straight to A&E over silly things, based on this experience.
