"Totally amazing ... so much care and attention"

About: General Surgery / Theatre Recovery General Surgery / Ward 6B Royal Victoria Hospital / Day Procedure Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

Hi,  just a quick few words about my time visiting my son at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH).

Firstly the reception are so friendly and helpful, then the staff on the ward 6b who have been totally amazing over the weeks I've been visiting so much care and attention they give to everyone, they deserve a pay rise for the job that they do.

The biggest down side I found was trying to park in the car park, which I'd say would have been anywhere from 45 minutes to maybe an hour and a half sitting in a queue ?? How is this even possible with a new hospital being built would parking not have been one of the first things on the planning application.. Anyways that my experience from visiting the RVH for the past lot of weeks. All staff short handed at times but amazing... coffee shops and cafe very good, only down side is parking .... so make sure you take two days off work to get parked up for your visit....! Take care....

Hi Rainfz68

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the lengthy queue you experienced at our Royal Car Park.

Patient & Client Support Services took on responsibility for Trust wide car parking in June 2020. The Belfast Trust encourages staff to commute to work by public transport, walking, cycling, by motorbike or to car share. Despite this, the demand for car parking by staff exceeds the limited amount of car parking available on each site – particularly on the RVH site.

Allocated car parking for staff reached capacity a number of years ago with many staff on waiting lists for car parking for up to 3 years. Therefore, staff often park in the public carparks and pay the daily tariff that is currently low for all day parking. Existing car parking tariffs are inexpensive compared to city centre carparks and attract other commuters to park in Trust car parks leaving very few spaces in the public carparks for patients and visitors.

This can add to the anxiety that many patients and their families may already be experiencing and leads to understandable levels of frustration. To ensure that available staff parking provision is targeted towards those in greatest need, the Trust recently agreed to apply carpark access criteria for staff. The pandemic delayed the rollout of the new criteria but we are piloting the new system to free up much needed spaces for patients and their relatives.

We have also introduced a designated waiting area (at the main entrance) so if a patient can be dropped off with a family member, other relatives can wait in these spaces without parking enforcement measures being applied as long as they remain in the vehicle awaiting a call to collect the patient. In order to manage safe traffic flow on our sites, we have had to introduce parking enforcement to deter vehicles parking/or being abandoned causing congestion and possible risk so we do encourage patients and their families to park in the waiting area spaces if at all possible.

I hope the above outlines the actions the Trust is taking to improve the car parking experience for our patients and their families but please do not hesitate to contact me if you experience any further issues with car parking access.
