"We waited for the telephone consultation and no call came"

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / Community Mental Health Team Mental Health / Community Mental Health

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has waited 13 months for an assessment with the community mental health team. This assessment was to restart meds he was previously on when he was younger.

I have called for any updates as to be given a rough idea of when he might get an appointment.  I was always told to call back in 2 weeks and they might know more. Eventually he received a date and time for his telephone consultation. The relief of getting an appointment was tremendous.

My son needs support from myself, I am an NHS worker myself and arranged time off to support my son.

We waited for the telephone consultation and no call came.  I called after waiting an hour to be told the clinic is cancelled and he should have been notified. He'll receive another appointment in the post.

I pride myself in the job I do within the NHS and thankfully we don't treat patients in this way.

I find this a sad way to treat people who have an appointment in the first place because they need help.

Dear Bonnie 14

I am so sorry that you and your son have had this frustrating experience. We aspire to provide high quality and timely mental health services, and are sorry that this has not been the case this time.

Mental Health services are very busy at the moment, as more people are needing help than was previously the case. We have been increasing the number of staff in our teams, to help respond and are working on providing appointments as soon as possible.

I am confident you will receive a new appointment very soon. Should this not be the case, please email me directly at Jo.Gibson2@aapct.scot.nhs.uk so I can look into your concerns more fully.

Jo Gibson

Head of Wellbeing and Recovery
