"Treatment after unusual gardening accident"

About: General practices in Fife

(as the patient),

After scaffolders damaged a hydrangea bush in my garden, I went out to dig up the hard woody pointed stem and root that remained. Unfortunately, I tripped turning to get the garden fork and fell, managing to impale my leg on the spike, which lifted a deep flap of tissue.

At A&E 3 stitches were applied and several strips, and I was advised to see a doctor and the practice nurse, Laura, at Kinghorn Medical Practice.

I have seen Laura twice a week recently, where she has changed dressings and given very friendly, supportive advice.

The skin did not take and she managed to dissolve it with gels, and also arranged an appointment with a tissue viability nurse.

However healing was extremely slow, probably because of oedema and I was referred to a plastic surgeon.

Laura then tried pressure bandaging and when I did see the consultant plastic surgeon he decided to wait as there had been a marked improvement. The wound has now closed over and dressings are no longer necessary. Laura has ordered support socks for me which I hope to receive shortly.

The practice has been under great pressure since the Covid lockdown. Despite this, the staff - and Laura in particular - have delivered outstanding care. She is always cheerful and explains everything so well, and has been a great support for me. Absolutely exemplary, and I am very grateful.

Update posted by Blossom Tripper (the patient)

Thankyou Shelley; the accident occurred in August and I have had the best of care from then till now from Laura, as healing was so slow. The Kinghorn practice is now under new management, and was without a permanent doctor for some time, so difficult circumstances to deliver such outstanding nursing for months.

Thank you for the good wishes,

Blossom Tripper.

Dear Blossom Tripper,

My name is Tanya, Laura's line manager.

What an absolute pleasure it was to receive this feedback - and incredible work from Laura. I am delighted that Laura's treatment negated the need for any plastic surgical intervention! I can only imagine the relief you experienced from this great news!

Laura is ever so grateful for your time taken to provide feedback, and will share with our wider team also.

Warm wishes for the future, and a very Merry Christmas to you,

Kind regards

Tanya
