"Bladder Botox"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Gynaecology St John's Hospital / Urology Western General Hospital / Urology

(as a service user),

I last had mine in early May 2023 and due every 3-6 month,  so now overdue. I was told yesterday the waiting list is 6-9 months from now.

I have a TVT mesh and dreadful urinary incontinence and need it done now as it impacts hugely on my life and mental well-being.

I stay in Edinburgh and have always been sent via uro gynae to St John’s but now find that it can be done at the Western General Urology department  in Edinburgh with little or no waiting time!  How can I get my treatment earlier? I really can’t wait 6-9 months!!

The TVT was supposed to rectify the incontinence but it’s made it much worse and extra expense of incontinence products over and above the NHS allowance is so expensive. I would be grateful for some advice.

Dear Meandmesh

Thank you for your patience with this. Rosalind Wise, Assistant Service Manager for Obs & Gynae, has given the below feedback:

“Botox procedures are currently carried out in a theatre setting and the waiting time is therefore impacted by our waiting list backlog. We are working hard to set up a service in an outpatient setting now that the new ambulatory care suite has opened at St John's Hospital. This will be a dedicated cystoscopy and botox service and will reduce the amount of time that patients have to wait. We expect to have the new service up and running by the end of January.”

I hope this assures you that the service are taking steps to reduce the waiting times. We are unable to provide any information on your individual circumstances due to Care Opinion being an anonymous platform. If you would like to know more, you can contact the Patient Experience Team as per my previous response, providing your name, date of birth and address, and we can look into this for you.

I would like to apologise once again for the delays you are experiencing, and hope you receive your treatment soon.

Take care

Louise

Update posted by Meandmesh (a service user)

This doesn’t help my current situation. I am unable to leave the house due to uncontrollable dribbling, frequent UTI’s and loss of dignity. I have been informed recently there are 50 in front of me on waiting list and I will have to wait another 6-9 months. Totally unacceptable to have to live with this current situation.
