"I felt very cared for by everyone and well supported"

About: Sidwell Street Clinic / Exeter Sexual Health

(as a service user),

I went in for a sexual health check and to look at some sores caused by a period of incontinence which I worried had given me BV.

The doctor was male and was very very kind and made me feel very comfortable to talk openly with him. When examination occurred he got a chaperone also. He was very kind and very gentle as it was very painful down there.

He took swabs and cultures to check for everything and started me on a course of antibiotics but also supplied me with numbing cream in 2 different forms to help ease the pain, especially when washing and toileting. He was very considerate and was amazing with my son, even when he panicked because I was behind a curtain, he kept him calm and then brought him to where he could see me.

When I was awaiting my bloods my son wanted to be fed, as I was breast feeding on two separate occasions I was approached and asked if I was comfortable where I was or if I wanted to have a room for more privacy. The other occasion I was asked if I would like some water or if there’s anything they could do for me whilst I fed.

Overall it was a very pleasant visit despite the problem being an embarrassing one for me. I felt very cared for by everyone and well supported. I was on my own with a toddler and at every occasion help was offered with the buggy when I was holding him. Was an amazing experience.

Hi februarytd57,

Thank you for providing this kind feedback about the service you received at the Exeter clinic. We do appreciate this kind of appointment isn't always easy, especially when trying to sort a private health issue at the same time as multi-tasking as a busy mum as well! It's really good to hear the team made you feel supported and well cared for, and that you were able to feed your son comfortably as well whilst you were in the department.

I hope the treatment(s) received solve the symptoms you've had, but be aware that if you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us again for advice, 0300 303 3989.

Best wishes,

April Brooks
