"Lack of support for breastfeeding"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as a service user),

I had my baby in Wishaw general Hospital. I wanted to breastfeed my baby. I was advised to stay in for 24 hours to get the support for Breastfeeding, which I didn't receive. I feel that staff have no time for you after you have had a baby. It is like a conveyor belt. In my experience, as soon as you have had your baby, they leave you alone and I felt they wanted me out of the door to move onto the next labour.

I was given a magazine to read about breastfeeding but no support from the midwives to help with how to hold your baby to get her to latch on. I was so disappointed that I really wanted to get breastfeeding off to a start. I was stressing out and my baby was stressed because I couldn't get her to latch. My baby was hungry so had to make the decision to put her on formula which wasn't what I wanted to do but it was either that or my baby would go hungry. This is my last baby and I wanted to try so hard to get breastfeeding right but the lack of support has really affected my chance for that. I feel so guilty that I haven't done what I wanted to do for my baby. Why promote breastfeeding if no one helps you to achieve this?

I can't fault the midwives that were there in my labour everything went well. I can't fault that part.

My midwife was great all the way through my pregnancy. She was so supportive and understanding. I gained a great bond with her and I am sad that she is finished with me now and I need to move on to the health visitor. She reassured me that she was not disappointed in me about the whole breastfeeding situation that it was just something that needed to be addressed at the hospital. I will miss her. We need more midwives like her.

Dear Runninggg83,

Can I firstly congratulate you on the birth of your baby. I hope you and your family are doing well.

I am sorry that this was your experience within our service regarding support with your breastfeeding journey and thank you for taking the time to let us know of your experience and how you felt. I am so glad that everything went well for you throughout labour and that your relationship with you community midwife was so positive.

We recognise the need for additional support for women and families and we are currently reviewing how we ensure women and their babies receive all the support they require with feeding and parenting support. We are continuing to provide training in infant feeding with all members of the team from students to support workers to support the midwives with the care we provide. We are also in the process of recruiting family support workers who will be present within the wards.

If there is anything else I can help with then please don't hesitate to contact me as it is important that we learn from your experience.

Best wishes,

Leah
