"Breast cancer care"

About: Borders General Hospital / Borders Macmillan Centre Borders General Hospital / Medical Oncology Borders General Hospital / Planned Surgical Admissions Unit Borders General Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I’m in the middle of a nightmare and I’m so grateful to have the care and support of the amazing frontline staff at BGH. I’ve felt a mixture of emotions since my diagnosis of breast cancer but nothing has been too much trouble - from the breast cancer nurses, the staff in the surgical admissions unit, the theatre staff, the team in nuclear medicine and the wider Macmillan team, I haven’t felt alone on this journey. I’ve had a number of horrendous experiences with NHS Borders in the past with management and non-frontline workers who need training in empathy and their treatment of people but the care I’ve received as a patient so far is second to none.

There’s still a long way to go for me but I know the people who matter the most - the frontline staff, are - for the most part, trying their best and doing an amazing job of supporting people as they navigate their way through difficult times and I thank them for their kindness, compassion and care.

Dear Aponi,

Thank you sincerely for taking the time to share your personal feelings and experience of compassionate care you received from the clinical teams. I will be sure to share your kind and appreciative words. Your feedback will mean a lot to the Staff who work hard to provide good standards of care.

I am really sorry to know that you have had a negative experience in the past. The cancer teams work closely with managerial colleagues for us to be able to provide safe care for everyone living in Borders. If you feel able to do so, would you mind making contact with NHS Borders Patient Experience Team who would can look into this further for you. The Patient Experience Team contact details are: 01896 826719 or patient.experience@borders.scot.nhs.uk.

Most importantly, as you deal with the turmoil of emotions and living with breast cancer, please do keep in touch with the Team here in Borders Macmillan Centre. We are here to support you.

With Kindest Regards,

Lynda Taylor
