"Colonoscopy experience"

About: Lagan Valley Hospital / Regional Day Procedure Unit

(as the patient),

I don’t usually go out of my way to share my experience with something but for some reason I feel compelled to.

I was recently referred to have a colonoscopy in the Lagan Valley Day Procedure Unit. I was not going to go to this appointment because I was absolutely consumed with anxiety but I did because I have a young baby that I need to think about. My daughter is the reason I chose to not be sedated because I didn’t want to be waiting around after it was done.

I cannot speak  more highly of all the staff I had any contact with, apart from one. During the procedure it was mostly uncomfortable but at some points it was extremely painful, taking into account that I was getting this done because of the pain I was telling my doctor about for 6 months.

During the procedure I would take the gas and air periodically when the pain was really bad, to the point I was silently crying, then I would leave it alone when I wasn't in pain. At one stage it was extremely painful so I started taking the gas and air, but for some reason the doctor felt the need to tell me to stop. This made me extremely uncomfortable and throughout the rest of the procedure I would not touch it. Until I was moaning in pain and the lovely endoscopy nurse lifted it up and told me to take it.

I am so thankful to the nurse because I was in a lot of pain but the doctor made me feel like I could not use it. I feel really hurt since then, I just don’t know why the doctor did that and no, me taking the gas and air does not affect what they are doing at all. Why did I have to be in pain because it bothered the doctor? Was I breathing too loud? If I wasn’t a young girl would I be treated differently? I had to linger in pain just because the doctor wanted me to.

I wish I spoke up and said no I'm in a lot of pain. They were a nice doctor up until that point, I felt it was just unnecessary. Thank you to all the other lovely staff, they made me feel so comfortable up until that point, and thank you the two endoscopy nurses who were in the room, you both were lovely, especially the nurse who comforted me during all of it.

Dear Shannon583

Thank you for sharing the story of your experience.

I am sorry to hear of the pain that you endured and apologise to you for each element of your care that may have been better.

It is great to hear how well looked after you felt for part of your experience.

I apologise to you that you were made to feel that you shouldn't have had gas and air which caused you pain and distress.

I invite you to email me at conor.campbell@setrust.hscni.net to share your name, date of birth, address, Health and Care number and contact number (should you wish to do so) in order for your care to be reviewed and responded to by service leadership at a personal level (rather than at service level).

I hope that you are feeling better and having your health issue resolved.

Best wishes

Conor

Update posted by Shannon583 (the patient)

Thank you it was not necessarily the pain I experienced because I fully expected to have some pain, it’s completely normal. The majority of the procedure was not painful but at times it was.

My experience is about when I was told to stop by the doctor who was doing the procedure whilst I was taking the gas and air. This made me feel uncomfortable and confused and almost like a sense of shame? Like I should suck it up and endure the pain because for some reason it bothered them.

It also stopped me from using it the rest of the procedure until the lovely nurse picked it up and gave it to me because they could hear me moaning in pain and squeezing their hand.

I do not wish to have a response from service leadership I just wanted to share my experience so the doctor may be told about it.

Shannon583

thank you for sharing your experience with the team

I am sorry to hear that you were in pain during your procedure

sometimes during the procedure the Doctor would ask you to stop taking the gas and air as it can move the bowel and they are unable to see what they need to for a full examination

I am glad the nurse had offered you the gas and air again as we do not want patient to be in pain during their procedure although sometimes the procedure can be uncomfortable at times

I am pleased that you felt look after by the nurses within the department and I will share your experience with the team to reflect on your experience and make any changes that are require

I hope you have recovered well and have a lovely Christmas

thank you

Jacqui
