"My mum experience from fall at home"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My mum had fallen and used personal alarm to summon help .

On responding to her call we found her on the floor in great pain and bleeding from cut above her eye. Her arm was obviously broken.

After the shock of seeing her like this we called ambulance as unsure if any other injury. The ambulance call handler was very good and supported our call, we were to wait for ambulance as a lot of activity that night.

While waiting we reassured our mum and kept her warm. Further call from ambulance call handler asked for update on mum and said help would come soon.

When crew came they were supportive to mum and with a joint effort we got her into ambulance  and up to hospital where we were in a queue and prioritised.

This was not a great experience for an elderly lady and in pain. Paramedic came and inserted cannula for pain relief helping my mum.

I felt sorry to see ambulances having to queue. This is a waste of resources for skilled people and keeps them from other calls.

We were waiting for at least 3 - 4 hours outside. The ambulance crew were amazing .

Cannot understand why this happens in this day and age. It cannot just be due to lack of beds. My mum eventually got cared for and kept in hospital for a week .

Dear Leopardhh45

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion.

I am so sorry to learn about your mum's fall. This must have been very worrying for her, and for yourself too. However it's lovely to read about the care given by the call handler, this must have been reassuring during the wait for the ambulance. I am also delighted to read about the treatment given by the crew who provided excellent care to your mum.

I am very sorry to read of the experience you mention in your post about the wait at the hosital. I am sure our colleagues at NHS Grampian will reply and make contact with you soon in relation to this.

If you would like your kind comments to passed on to our call handler and also the crew I would be more than happy to arrange this for you. If so, please may I ask you contact us at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your mother's name, address and date of when we attended to her. Please may we also ask you make reference to your Care Opinion username which will allow us to link to this story.

Thank you once again

Best wishes to you and your mum and I hope she is on the mend!

Lesley
