"Birth of our daughter at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Neonatal Unit (Special Care Baby Unit) Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

From the minute we walked into the maternity hospital to the moment we were finally discharged and able to leave with our beautiful baby girl, we were looked after by the most amazing team of professionals. They made our experience at Aberdeen a positive and special time.

At 33weeks I was admitted to triage where I was looked after by Jill. She was utterly brilliant and whilst she couldn’t work out what exactly was going on with me, her calming and reassuring nature helped when I was in agonising pain.

After making it to 39weeks, I was taken for an emergency c-section. The team in surgery were like a well-oiled machine. We had such a laugh and we were very well looked after. Even although I was being rummaged around in, I still felt in very safe hands and the procedure ran smoothly. My wound is phenomenal: so neat and healing well.

Thereafter, when I was fit enough, I moved to Summerfield for 2 nights. My only criticism is the fact that there were not enough staff and the ones who were there were left running around trying to be complete superwomen to everyone! Special mention goes to Helen and Katie, from the midwives team, who came regularly to check on our ward even although they would not normally be assigned to us. Without the advice and guidance from Helen, I wouldn’t have gotten through the nights of endless tears and feeling of incompetence. Her support meant the absolute world! Especially when breastfeeding was not coming as naturally as I’d of liked it to. She was always on hand and provided me with the reassurance and confidence promoting my own self-belief and nurturing my motherly instincts. I don’t think I’d have persevered with feeding for as long as I did without her “no-nonsense approach”, early hours chats and genuine care. Even without buzzing for assistance, she knew when to come and would genuinely appear like an angel in the night.

As first time parents, we want to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of the members of staff who we encountered throughout our journey. We’ll forever be indebted to them for their expertise and for making the birth of our daughter nothing short of a joyous experience; one which we will forever remember and cherish for all our days to come.

Dear Mamabear12,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl!
I hope you and your family are doing well.
I am overjoyed to read such a positive experience and despite your birth not going as planned, that you continued to feel safe and reassured throughout.

Best wishes

Jo Craig
