During the pandemic I had a lumpectomy for breast cancer and was doing well until I got the shock diagnosis of ovarian cancer in June 2023. It was even more distressing to be told it wasn’t curable but I was determined to do all I could to improve my health in order to give myself more time. I made a start by finding out all about cancer fighting foods and concocted a smoothie drink to have every morning. This had definite benefits as when I went to get fluid drained from my abdomen the doctor and nurse were amazed when the ultrasound showed there was no longer fluid there.
I was called for a prehab assessment and was pleased that I scored higher than average for my age. It was then that I was asked if I wanted to join a fitness class by video link. I was so delighted to be able to do so and it was made very easy for me with the guidance of PE Joe the instructor. He helped me get set up and very patiently took me through all the procedures. I looked forward every week to his class and it was definitely beneficial to keep me flexible and in good physical condition whilst I was going through chemotherapy. I still have one more treatment to go but sadly my exercise classes have run their course though I can still get PE Joe’s class on YouTube which I intend to do. He also gave me links to other exercise avenues so that I can continue to stay fit.
The chemotherapy sessions have been made as easy as possible for me with all the staff being cheerful and positive and Marie always on hand with cups of tea and kind words.
All the doctors I’ve met have been candid but reassuring in ways that gives me hope for a longer future.
After my last treatment I have to have a CT scan and then if eligible I hope to be put on maintenance medication. So my story is not over yet and I will continue to do all I can to keep going as long as I can. A very big thank you to all the doctors, nurses, physical trainers, auxiliary staff and receptionists who have shown nothing but kindness and understanding to me and have given me hope and confidence in my situation.
