"Something so simple can make such a difference"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I recently spent quite a bit of time in the ED department, at CAH with a family member with dementia. The nursing & auxillary staff we met were very kind and caring, showing great awareness of the potential for delirium and trying to minimise the risks. Special thanks to Patricia listening to our concerns about potential delirium & getting a bed sorted. The Red Area was great - quiet and dark at night which ensured a good sleep.

We also had a stay in the Yellow Area. Again, the staff were lovely. Unfortunately the room we were in had glass windows onto the link corridor with sensor lights, which meant the room lit up like daylight every time someone walked past (very frequently) so if we could make a suggestion, it would be to add blinds/paint blackout on the glass windows to prevent disturbance from the corridor light at night. (My family member was very disorientated when the light came on, resulting in minimal sleep / disorientation regarding time of day, or in this case, night).

Something so simple can make such a difference to those with dementia / at risk of delirium.

Hi Septemberyk76;

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am really delighted to hear that you felt staff were kind and caring and that you and your family member had a good experience of the Red Area in ED - this is really reassuring and the staff will be happy to hear this as we are aware that ED can be a difficult environment for people with Dementia.

I am sorry that your experience in the yellow area wasn't as pleasant, and you are right - simple changes can make a huge difference. ED in CAH have undertaken a number of quality improvement projects regarding patients with Dementia and are really committed to continually improving how they provide care to patients with Dementia.

Staff in ED are currently working with a group of people living with Dementia to try and improve environmental design. We will bring your feedback to our next meeting to see if there are simple ways to work around this in future.

Hopefully this response addresses your concerns.

If you would like to discuss further you can contact me directly via email.
