My mum was admitted to AAU in mid-November, after she became very unwell at home. I was aware that we likely would have a long wait due to the pressures in the area. I was dreading the need for her to be hospitalised due to her dementia and anticipating her distress and disorientation.
Staff looked after her with humour, care and compassion, they took the time to explain what they were doing and why. They monitored her closely and she improved to the point she started to scheme her escape as ‘she was fine’ (she wasn’t).
She was diagnosed quickly, treatment commenced and there was visible improvement. They ensured she was offered hot food and fluids as well as giving her loads of biscuits to snack on if she wanted to. I left reassured that she was being well looked after and was safe.
She is now in a ward but I wanted to thank everyone she encountered within the department - Drs, nurses, students, HCSW, porters and domestic staff.
