"Admission to A M U"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

(as the patient),

Seemed like chaos, rude Nurse who clearly thought I did not need to be there. Patients shouting, ghastly patients staring at me and one who it seemed decided to masturbate under the blankets while yelling and staring at me. It felt like a madhouse and as a woman I felt very unsafe. Dirty toilets.

Everything said to other patients by nurses delivered at top volume.

Told by afore mentioned Nurse that this ward did not want me, that ward did not want me and Infectious Diseases ward would take me but someone had to be boarded out to give me a bed. As it turned out I was very ill with sepsis, I found this nurse had zero manners was not happy.

That treatment and what followed has made me so traumatised and fearful of Ninewells that it has affected every aspect of my life trying to deal living with metastatic cancer. The thought of being an inpatient in such an unsafe environment ever again is a continuing nightmare. When I eventually was discharged in poor fettle I was waking up screaming and crying in the night.

I thought I was quite a strong person. Ninewells broke me.

Dear Fdisscontinually,

Thank you for providing feedback on your stay in AMU in Ninewells Hospital. It was upsetting to hear of your experience whilst in AMU, please allow me to pass on my sincerest apologies.

Your feedback has raised many issues I would be keen to further explore. If you feel you would like to, I can support you to take this through the complaints and feedback process where a proper investigation can be carried out. It is important that I can look into what happened during your stay so we can make improvements and another patient does not have the same experience.

I am concerned about how this experience has impacted on you, especially when you already have poor health. I hope you have some support at home to help you through these difficult times.

I am so sorry that this has happened and I would be so grateful if you could get in touch. My email address is lindaa.nicol@nhs.scot.

If you would like to contact the Patient Experience Team directly, the contact details are: tay.feedback@nhs.scot or 0800 027 5507.

Again, I would urge you to make contact and thank you again for your feedback.

Kindest Regards

Linda Nicol, Senior Nurse, AMU & SSM
