"I had 5 start treatment at Kings Mill hospital"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust King's Mill Hospital / Cardiology Specialist Therapy Services / Mid Notts Cardio-Respiratory Services

(as a service user),

This happened in June 2022.

1. In the early hours I awoke to find my husband having a heart attack in bed beside me, he was ashen white, sticky, sweaty and breathing strange.

2. I phoned 999 and a voice answered I told him my husband's symptoms.

Angela arrived and was a brilliant paramedic. It was a Code red in Kirkby in Ashfield

3. Angela worked on on my husband for about 30 mins, the ambulance couple arrived, they were very kind helping him onto the stretcher (he was very ill)

4.  December 2022  he had heart attack

December 2022 my husband had defibrillator  and pacemaker fitted and in December 2022 - came home

5. Two weeks later - in a wheelchair, I took my husband to have his "wound checked" at Kingsmill.

6. We then went to "pacing clinic" for all kind of tests done and they gave me a bedside monitor, this monitored him from 10pm to 7am next morning

7. We met Julie, Heart nurse Ashfield Clinic. My husband started seeing Julie and we went together, so I could learn about his tablets too. Julie was absolutely brilliant easy to talk to/excellent at her job. An ambassador for the NHS

8. Started walking M/W/F. It was not far at the beginning, but each day legs became stronger. Walking around local car parks and village until he could walk all the way round park and rewarded with a cup of tea at the tea wagon)

9. Learning the name of the tablets and amounts, now feeling stronger daily.

10. We are now into Jan-Feb 2023 and making progress

11. Everyday I measure my husband's blood pressure/sats/heartbeat

12.  Then more blood tests taken at GP for Julie

13. We have had to purchase a higher toilet seat to make it easier to get up off toilet.

14. March/April 2023 Sat in garden thinking how lucky he was that all the professionalism shown to him and us at Kings Mill Hospital was incredible - Thank you doctors who worked on him, and provided the pace maker.

15. DVLA said because due to the defibrillator fitted there would be a a 14 week review while they looked at driving record.

16. The lady Dr. Aye, Cardiac Consultant would have the final say whether he could have the driving license returned.

17. Saw Julie again-to tweak these medicines for the final time. We miss our visits to see her now and our chats.

18. In .May 2023 Dr. Aye had a half hour conversation by phone to our home. Dr. Aye went through the medicines and ask if we had any questions and made sure we understood what they were for. At the end of this conversation Dr. Aye said he could drive the car again.

19. In June the  DVLA finally phoned and said they were returning the driving license.

20. Thank you to the excellent care we received in the two wards by nurses. A year I shall never forget.

I could not ask for more, we had 5 star ***** treatment at Kings Mill Hospital

For every person I came into contact with, who helped to get me back to a healthy place.

Thank you everyone for your professionalism and skills.

I would not be sitting in the sunshine today enjoying the summer 2023 with out you all.

Dear ndusdk95, Thank you so much for the comprehensive feedback you have taken the time to post, it is very well received and I will endeavour to feed this back to Julie directly. All feedback is invaluable be that positive or constructive (but always nice when it is good)

Sorry to hear that your husband needed this amount of care but I am so happy he has had such a good and safe outcome.

All the best for the future

Carrie

Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words with us. We do hope your husband is feeling much better now and we are delighted to hear that our ambulance crews were able to help you both in what must have been a scary time for you. We are very proud of our ambulance crews.

If you are able to, we would appreciate you sharing your comments with our Patient Experience team, with as much detail as you can (e.g. date, time and location), so that they might identify the crew who cared for you and share your words with them. You may contact them via telephone, leaving a voicemail on 0333 012 4216 or email emas.pals@nhs.net.

It is so lovely to hear that your husband has his licence back and you are both enjoying your lives - we are so grateful for you sharing your experience

Best wishes, Sarah Connerton, Patient Experience Manager, East Midlands Ambulance Service
