"Waiting for long term contraception"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Sexual and Reproductive Health

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has approached our GP and asked for the mirena coil to be fitted to help with her unpredictable and very heavy cycle. She has been referred to the sexual health service at Ninewells to have this done rather than at our GP due to her age and availability of pain relief

Some weeks had passed after the referral and she chased this up with the GP. They advised that they weren’t surprised she hasn’t had any appointment yet, as it’s a 6 months wait at the moment

6 months! For a teenage girl to have long term contraception!? It just astounds me. A member of GP staff told me that yes it is shocking, that’s why they don’t like to broadcast it.

Dear Marsfk44,

Thank you for taking the time to post about your daughter's experience and I am sorry for your frustration.

I am unable to comment on your daughters situation due to not having their personal information but would like to assure you that all young people at risk of pregnancy up to the age of 18 are a high priority for our service.

If the referral we receive does not indicate that a young person is sexually active and requires long acting reversible contraception such as a Mirena coil for contraceptive purposes as well as requiring this for heavy menstrual bleeding then the referral may be passed to our colleagues in gynaecology.

I have spoken with our consultant who vets our received referrals and she has advised that your daughter would be welcome to contact our waiting list secretary (Val) on 01382 425533 and let her know of her circumstances so that her referral can be reviewed.

I am also sorry that you were given information regarding our waiting list which is incorrect and I appreciate that this would have astounded you.

Best wishes,

Claire
