"Very informative and reassuring"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency North Devon District Hospital / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

On this occasion, I only spoke to the out of hours team. They were helpful but I was told to go to A&E due to my high temperature. Arrived in A&E, nurses all amazing however I was shut in a side room due to having covid. I saw a junior doctor around six hours after my arrival who had no idea how to deal with a cancer patient. I had to wait for a senior doctor three hours later, who basically said I was fine and could go home.

I rang the seamoor unit to check having covid with cancer and I spoke to a gentleman who was great and very informative and reassuring. He also put me over to the covid team for antiviral meds to help with the symptoms. Something A&E should have done. If I hadn't of rang seamoor I wouldn't have any help.

Ray, thank you for putting the time to let us know about your concerns re your recent visit to A&E and the support from the Seamoor unit.

I will arrange to speak with my colleague in A&E to discuss your visit and to work towards a more suitable pathway for patients that are in the same situation as you going forward.

I am very pleased that you did call back to the Seamoor unit and that we are able to arrange the antiviral medications for you at this point.

If you could please bear with me, whilst I speak to the teams and I will then come back to you with an update.

I hope you are feeling stronger in yourself now and wish you the very best,

Lisa

Dear Ray,

Thank you for taking your time to provide us with your feedback. Is it great to hear about your experience with the nursing staff within the Emergency Department and I will ensure that this is passed on to the wider team.

I would be very happy to look into your specific care and treatment further with one of the clinical team for reflection on pathways as my colleague Lisa Beasant suggested within her response, as well as for development of staff / continued learning.
However care opinion does anonymise patient information. So if you would like to contact me directly we can initiate a review for further understanding learning and development.

My contact email is sophie.hutchings1@nhs.net. Please do not hesitate to get in contact with Me.

Thank you again and I hope you are on the mend post COVID.

Good Morning Ray,

As promised, Sophie and I met on Friday to review our practices in A&E and we have discussed this fully.

If you would like to respond directly to Sophie we can look at your specific case however this is being shared with the Clinical Lead of A&E and this will go to the A&E Governance meeting in January to ensure that the training provided to the junior doctors is robust in regards to the situation you were in.

If you would like any further information please contact Sophie and she will arrange to meet with me if required.

Best wishes to you.

Lisa
