"We couldn’t fault the staff or the care we experienced!"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I had planned a home birth with the help of the amazing Ayrshire and Arran home birth team! Unfortunately I ended up being admitted to Crosshouse hospital for an emergency c section! Fortunately everything went smoothly! Both baby and I were given the best care and couldn’t have asked for more from any of the staff we had contact with!

The midwives in the assessment unit were able to keep myself and my partner calm and fully informed from the moment we stepped in the unit! They helped transfer us to the labour ward where the midwives there took over our care. Due to contractions and the drama of having to be admitted I didn’t get the names of the midwives helping however we did have a student who was equally as amazing as the qualified staff! Again they were professional and warm and helped keep me calm and comfortable! I was so disheartened not getting the home birth I had planned, but the experience I did end up having was the best out of a bad situation!

When I was told a c section was needed, the staff explained the prodcedure clearly and helped me through contractions as they transferred me to theatre. And even held the gas and air for me!

Once transferred to the ward the staff helped me adjust to looking after a new baby! Our midwife Roslyn was fantastic! She took time to explain everything and checked in with us regularly, she helped calm my anxious mind as a first time mum! Especially helping with breastfeeding and ensuring baby was latching right! No question or amount of times I hit the buzzer was too much for anyone we met on the ward! The HCA were there to show me how to swaddle, and help with my anxious questions!

Given our birth story isn’t what we had planned, we couldn’t fault the staff or the care we experienced! The midwives from the assessment unit even popped in to meet baby once she had arrived safe and sound!
