"More medical support or even a contact would be most helpful"

About: Older People’s Services / Hospital at Home Northern Sector

(as a relative),

Hospital at home (Northern Sector)

The hospital at home service was very good while it lasted but unfortunately the family were left high and dry once the medical team signed off.

I must say that the occupational Therapists were exceptional.

They listened to our needs and were available for a while longer than the medical team.

In going forward, I think when a family are prepared to look after an elderly patient at home, more medical support or even a contact would be most helpful.

I know that this support should be provided by the GP but with personal experience, it is almost impossible to get past the receptionists, but when I have managed to the GPs are very helpful.

Thanks for your feedback.

I'm am so sorry to hear that you felt we left you high and dry when treatment was finished. When the team commence treatment we will obtain bloods and monitor these as required with other various tests.

Once the patient is deemed to medically stable and no longer requires medical input we will discharge as they have finished their acute phase. The GP will then receive a fully updated letter of the treatment we provided and any follow up test tests required.

I fully understand that looking after your elderly relative at home can be worrying if issues arise and you are unable to get any medical advise. I could advise that the district nurses are also available if you are unable to get in touch with the GP.

I agree that the Occupational therapist is excellent and can follow up for a longer period. I will pass on your feedback to her and also express your concerns to the medical team.

I really hope that this has not had a negative impact on you or your relative and hope that if our input is required in future that the GP refers to the team.

Many thanks
