"An operation to remove a squamous cell carcinoma from temple"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

(The previous year, I had a biopsy on the site of the above operation. The preparation for the procedure was meticulous, including being required to wear a bonnet to cover my hair, which was carefully tucked inside.)

On the date of the operation above, I was not required to wear a head covering and no attempt was made to restrain my hair. Following the procedure and upon removal of the dressing, I found that several strands of my hair, still attached to my head had been stitched into the wound. I subsequently had three different incidents of infection in the site, all requiring antibiotics.  It’s too early to say whether this might affect the eventual healing process.   At my check up for the procedure four months later, I mentioned this to the clinician, but she dismissed my concerns.  I had been reluctant to raise the issue, and felt that my concerns had not been fully addressed.

Dear Athos,

Thank you for reaching out with your recent feedback of your experiences in Dermatology.

We welcome this feedback and it is important for us to know when patients haven't quite had the experience they had hoped for.

I am pleased you felt the procedure you had last year was meticulous.

Due to the nature of the type of surgical procedures we perform here, there are areas which are more challenging, such as the head. We do try to limit the amount of hair removal prior to excising, this can be difficult. We strive to do our upmost in ensuring the wounds and dressings are both comfortable and secure for the patient.

I am sorry on this occasion you felt 'dismissed' and were reluctant top raise your concerns.

I would welcome you to contact me directly either via telephone or email, should you wish to discuss this further.
