"Really put me at ease"

About: Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to AU1 at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, recently.

I appreciate they are extremely busy, understaffed and rushed off their feet, but I waited around 7-8 hours before anyone seen me, and in this time I was in excruciating pain head to toe.

On a more positive note, I would like to thank the nurse who did my cannula. I have a horrible fear of needles and they really put me at ease, it was quick and painless.

Little did I know this would be the beginning of me constantly being a pin cushion for the next 2 weeks. They were so patient with me, friendly and kind - just what you need when you are feeling nervous and afraid.

Dear hoodie158

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry for the delay in you receiving a response.

I am please the nurse managed to insert you cannula quickly and without you experiencing pain. Having a cannula inserted and blood tests can be daunting and uncomfortable, but you did really well considering you have a fear of needles.

I am sorry you initially waited so long to be seen in AU1 especially as you were in such pain. If you would like to discuss this further please email me at Siobhan.mcilroy@nhs.scot and put "Really put me at ease" in the title.

Thank you again for sharing your story, and I hope you are feeling better.

Best wishes and take care, Siobhan

Dear Hoodie158,

thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.

I would like to apologise for the long wait to be seen, especially when you describe being in so much pain.

I am sorry to hear you have a phobia of needles but pleased to hear that the staff were patient with you and managed to insert the cannula quickly and pain free.

I will share your response with the AU1 Team and hope you are feeling better.

Kind regards,

Lisa Stokoe
