"The system works very smoothly in this department"

About: Oncology / Radiotherapy

(as the patient),

I suppose everyone mentions the car parking which is not good, although I once had an afternoon appointment and parking was fine then.

The most important thing is the welcoming friendly nature of all the staff in the department. Although it would be nice to have the same people in the treatment room each time, I know this is not possible. All staff are approachable If you have any questions and they make it clear that they know all about you and what has gone before.

The system works very smoothly in this department. It is very difficult to juggle the drinking of the water and the timings of treatment especially if there are any unexpected delays, but I don’t know how this could be resolved.

The Maggie Centre recommended bringing my own warm flavoured water from home as this is easier than drinking cold water and this has been good advice.

The temperature is sometimes a bit cool in the waiting area.

I think it could be pointed out to patients that they can use the disabled loo if the other one is occupied as most men make a beeline for the loo as soon as they have finished treatment!

Dear Greenhouse1, thankyou so much for taking your time to feedback your kind words and your experiences while attending treatment. My name is Damian, Head of Therapeutic Radiography Services, I am really glad you found the department welcoming and that the staff who treated you where approachable. This is exactly the atmosphere we want to create in the department and I will ensure this is passed on to the Healthcare support workers, Therapeutic Radiographers and oncology support team that would of be part of your care.

I fully understand the importance of having a continuity of staff throughout your treatment and we would echo this as well, unfortunately it is challenging, but we will try and act on this as much as we can as well as ensuring we are highlighting the disabled toilet for people to use also.

While we try to run as smoothly as possible we do have moments of delay and we are conscious how difficult this can be to manage when you are have to drink before treatment. It is really important for us to ensure we communicate to patients as soon as possible when things are not to time so that we can work with you to manage timings, thankyou for your understanding.

During the cold spell we have just had we have found the department has been particularly cold, this has been passed to organisational meetings for investigation and we do apologise. Although I do think the handy hint of warmer water is a really great one and will incorporate this into our instructions in the future.

Once again thankyou very much and we wish you well for the future

Damian

Dear Greenhouse1, I wanted to let you know that after some investigation and new parts, our heating is functioning better in the department at the moment. We will keep monitoring this to ensure the best environment for our patients.

Thankyou again for raising this issue.

Damian
