"Very disappointed in the care I was given"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Surgery Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Surgical Observation Unit

(as the patient),

I came in with suspected appendicitis from my GP recently. I thought myself that it wasn’t and it was just gynae related as I already have issues in that area. Whilst down in the Surgical Observation Unit I cannot fault the care that I was given, they had a plan that two doctors agreed on then I was sent up to the ward. Whilst up in 106 I cannot fault the nurses either, the care I received from both them and Surgical Observation Unit was brilliant.

However, when I got moved to 106 the doctor that was under my care changed and I am not happy with the way I’ve been treated. I have been in this position before, mainly due to ongoing gynae issues and this time I thought it was the same - a bad flare up. I felt my consultant up in ward 106 was completely dismissive, they did not seem to care or listen to anything I was saying. It felt like they couldn’t get away quick enough.

This consultant made me feel like I was a time waster and put my pain down to a tummy bug, which none of the nurses agreed with. My pain got a lot worse, so much so that the nurses called the night doctor to come see me. The care given by them was completely different, I could not fault it. They had a plan in place after seeing me how I was.

However, in the morning the consultant changed the plan once again. They came in and asked me what was so bad about last night. To me this is not the care that I should have been given. Throughout my stay in hospital I felt like the consultant did not care at all. It was the junior doctors that came round with them that said they could increase my painkillers etc. They seemed like they cared and wanted to help, but the consultant felt like the complete opposite to me.

It took for me to have a breakdown to the nurse for me to be given a scan and another breakdown to the nurse to be able to speak to gynae before discharge. I told the consultant that I was bleeding from below and they just said that was because I was unwell from this bug, which I think was ludicrous. I told the consultant I thought it was a flare up and they said no it’s a tummy bug.

I was sent up to the Royal from my GP as they have a gynaecology department in case it was this and I feel this was just completely written off from the consultant. I was wanting to change doctors/consultant but I did not want to cause a hassle, now looking back I wish I did. I would like a reply about this as you can imagine I am very disappointed in the care I was given from this consultant.

I also had an incident where my cannula came out during the night, I therefore buzzed the nurse and they came and took the needle but did not clean up the mess. I have pictures of this, the bed was wet from the fluid that was coming out the IV and there was blood as well. This happened around 4 am and the bedding did not get changed until the day nurses came in. The day charge nurse knew about it and was going to speak to their colleague. My sheets didn’t get changed until approximately 8:30 am.

Whenever I’ve had to be admitted before the care has been brilliant, this time not so much. The nurses on ward 106 most are absolutely brilliant, just that one nurse on the night shift the night the bed sheet situation went on wasn’t great at all.

Dear Sophie826,

I am very sorry to learn of the poor experience that you have described in relation to the care you received from the doctor responsible for your care. I was also saddened to learn of your experience in relation to waiting a significant amount of time to have your bed sheets changed following your cannula falling out - I am sorry that this happened. This is not the standard of care I would expect from the nursing team within Ward 106.

I would be grateful of the opportunity to discuss your concerns further, in order that I might be able to assist you in seeking resolution to you concerns. If you would like to discuss this with me personally, I can be contacted on 01312423479.

Alternatively, you can make contact with the Patient Experience Team using the details below:

Best Wishes,

Shaun Robertson
