"Encounter with member of staff"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Daisy Paediatric Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

My young daughter was admitted with bronchiolitis by RSV recently and we were cared for by the amazing nurses and doctors from the Daisy ward in Daisy Hill.

The nurses were so caring and accommodating for me when I was in complete distress watching my wee girl being incubated and attached to a drip and tube inserted for feeding as she was so poorly, I honestly could not praise these girls enough!!

I did however have a bad encounter with a member of staff who obviously was not a nurse or a doctor and in my opinion was training as they seemed to have no knowledge of how to speak to a worried mum.

On the 2nd to last day they came into our room, where I had never had dealings with them before, I'd just seen them in hallways, telling us that the Dr thought it was time for us to go as we had come off tube feeds that morning as well as coming out of incubator that morning also. I then said I would like to see the doctor if that is the case, as at the morning checks it was said the Dr would examine the afternoon and then possibly talk about home but not that this was a definite.

I didn’t catch the member of staff's name as I was gobsmacked at how they spoke to me and my partner and proceeded to stand on in room when the nurses had advised me it could be one more night as baby was so tiny and unwell in previous days! Thankfully the doctor didn’t agree and didn’t discharge us as my daughter had to go back on tube feeds that night!

The next day I then saw the same member of staff while I was going to get something to eat in canteen, and they said to me you're still here then, where I told them about the night before going back to tube feeds and they responded that maybe it’s a good thing you stuck your ground. I was so annoyed by this as my daughter had choked on the nurse in the middle of the night and brought up so much phlegm and choked on me as well which was why we went back to tube feeding!

I feel like this member of staff needs a course on how to deal with patients, especially in the setting.

As for the rest of the girls and doctors, I am in awe of the work they do and how much help they are to the worried sick parents coming into them!

Hello crocodilerp74 as Head of Service I am very sorry and disappointed to read of your experience. This is not the standard of communication we expect of our staff towards parents who are more than anxious about their child or indeed to any parent.

Could I ask you to contact me on my mobile 07769586609 to discuss this in more detail and to enable me to provide a response: I am working Monday to Friday next week.

Regards

Bernie
