"Recent elective stay"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Acute Receiving Unit (Ward 2c)

(as a parent/guardian),

This is some feedback on ward 2C following a 2 night elective stay by my daughter. Playroom, patient bed and offer of Medicinema were all great positives.

I'd suggest that if possible newly diagnosed diabetic patients are not placed in the 4 bed bays (NB this was not the reason my daughter was admitted). There is no possibility of privacy for distressed patients or parents and while the physical clinical need may not be high the psychological distress can be and clearly was for at least one family.

The ward information folder states that parents if staying overnight can use a shower on floor 3. The domestics on that floor do not know this and only the lounge/coffee area is available to parents.

Lunch/dinner for parents seems now to be a default - welcome if wanted but unnecessary if not required. Unclear also if it is OK to bring hot drinks onto ward (seemed inconsistent).

It would seem common sense for a carb-counted menu to be available on a ward admitting diabetics. At home we weight food - it is very difficult to demonstrate correct carb counting to staff when guessing food content and weight.

Patient/parent held medication should not be removed to the drug room without notifying them; if there is a policy of doing this it needs to be made known to families and all staff. Being unable to find insulin pens in the morning is not helpful for parents.

Dear Libstech,

Thank you for taking your time to leave your feedback on care opinion, I am please to hear that enjoyed some of our facilities such as medicinema and the playroom during your stay with us. I hope you daughter is now recovering well at home following your stay with us.

I am sorry to hear you encountered some issues in regards to facilities to parents. The shower facilities are inside the lounge coffee area for parents on the 3rd floor. I will share this with our facilities team to ensure parents are given the correct information.

I am sorry that you did not feel that the process for managing meals with diabetic patients was appropriate, our staff are very experienced in calculating carb counting for our children's meals and always on hand to help. I will give a reminder to staff to ensure they highlight this to parents with diabetic children.

In relation to utilising our four bedded bays, we endeavour to place all children in cubicles if possible, however there are occasions due to ward activity that this is not possible.

If you would like to discuss further any issues raised in your care opinion please free to contact me via email at - amanda.sheridan2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Thank you again for taking the time to leave your feedback.

Amanda Sheridan

SCN Ward 2C.
