"I knew I was in safe hands at having this procedure done"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had been waiting for a hysterectomy for several months after many, many problems over the years.  I was given an opportunity to have my hysterectomy carried out vaginally at Ayrshire Central Hospital by Dr Sokolova. This is a relatively new procedure over here and I have absolutely no idea why it is not now the standard procedure for hysterectomies.

Dr Sokolova has been my gynaecologist for years and I knew I was in safe hands at having this procedure done. She is kind, understanding and is decisive to your needs. She always remembers particular things about your life and you never feel that you are being rushed by her.

I was given lots of reading material and I fully understood the type of operation I was to receive. I had my general anaesthetic and when I came to, I felt really well. I was exceptionally well cared for by all of the staff in the ward and nothing was too much trouble. I would have been out of the ward within a few hours after my operation however, I still needed to pass urine and so my leaving time was delayed until the evening.

I walked down the stairs and out of the hospital on the same day as my operation, which to me was incredible considering I had just had a total hysterectomy carried out. My recovery time was fast and I was back to work in no time at all.

Since my operation I have gone on to lose over 2 stone in weight, I now have no bleeding every day and I feel like a new woman. The quick recovery allowed me to get on with my life and I have not looked back since.

I would like to profusely thank Dr Sokolova for her expertise, professionalism and forward thinking in woman's health. She has changed my life. This type of operation should be the 'norm' for hysterectomies and I very much feel that the NHS is missing a trick by not having this as standard procedure.

Thanks to all at the hospital for making my experience such a positive one.
