"I’ll never forget the care I was given that day"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I had to have an emergency c section. My partner wasn’t able to come to theatre with me. It’s taken me 6 months to be able to process the birth of my boy.

However I would like to say a huge thank you to the midwife, Rachael, who held my hand through the whole birth and introduced my baby to me. I lost more blood than expected and the theatre team kept me calm, explaining everything that was happening.

A special thank you to the student nurse Ellie, who held my hand and sick bowl when I was incredibly scared. It’s an operation I’m sure you see every day, however I’ll never forget the care I was given that day.

Also thank you to Nicole, who looked after me back on labour ward after the section.

Dear SWH

Congratulations on the birth of your son. I am sorry you have been unable to process the birth due to the blood you lost during your caesarean section and your partner was unable to be present at the section. We offer support and can refer you to the Thistle Clinic if you would like to have a debrief to help you understand what happened.

I am pleased Rachael and Ellie supported you during this difficult time for you and will ensure your comments are fed-back to her. I will also mention to Nicole that you felt she provided you with good care following your section.

If you feel you would benefit on a debrief of your experience, please contact me on 01896 827076 and I can organise it.

Kind Regards

Kirsteen Guthrie
