"Understanding autism"

About: The Wells Road Centre

(as a service user),

I feel like they don't understand autism, or me. I feel huge emotion, and sometimes cry at movies or music. I feel deep feelings, but sometimes feel unemotional. I don't have regular thoughts and feel my personal condition and awkward. I find it hard to communicate what I am feeling or thinking.

Hi marchtb96, I would like to thank you for making this post on care Opinion. It must take some courage to reach out and express how you feel inside particularly if you are used to feeling you need to hide how you feel or receive responses from people that show a lack of understanding.

I think it would be a good idea for us to arrange some autism awareness sessions for staff, particularly as we have had quite a few new starters recently.

Even with general awareness sessions I think it is important that the staff team understand how to support you as an individual. A good way to do this would be to work on a care plan with your named nurse that tells staff more about you as a person. You could detail in the plan some of the challenges you face and provide advice to staff about what would help.

If you already have a plan like this it might be that the team need to make sure it is communicated better.

If you feel this approach would help or have any other thoughts please do get in touch with a member of your care team or Ward Manager. Equally I would be happy to help ensure that the right people are informed.

You can contact me 01159691300 Ext. 10660 if you would like to discuss these concerns more directly or ask the ward staff to arrange for me to visit you.

Thanks

Gregg Murray

Hello again marchtb96.

After making some enquiries I have discovered that all staff are required to complete 'Oliver McGowan Training'. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training.

We will now ensure all of our staff complete this training online. I have been informed that face to face training for staff that work with patients is also due to be rolled out by the Trust very soon which will really improve awareness amongst the teams.

I hope that this will have a positive affect on the experience of people with autism in our service in future.
