"Contrast in Sexual Health Services"

About: Barnstaple Health Centre / Barnstaple Sexual Health Sidwell Street Clinic / Exeter Sexual Health

(as a service user),

After being unable to make an appointment for my GP, 2 other GP practices and a local sexual health walk in centre, I managed to get an appointment at the North Devon centre, as I was here visiting friends (I'm not local).

I was now over 2 weeks due for contraceptive injection and was getting uncomfortable cramps as a result.

The team here couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful! Highly recommend this centre!

Was seen on time and the staff were very efficient!

By contrast Exeter, which was actually nearer, were a nightmare to try and get hold of!

Phones just ringing and ringing until an automated message tells you to ring another number (actually the same number you've just rung!)

Eventually the message will change near the end of the day to say all appointments gone and ring back tomorrow unless its an emergency/urgent.

After 5 attempts over 2 days I actually did hold on after the emergency message to be told all appointments for the next few days gone, and they had some for later in the week but I literally had to treat it as an urgent matter to get to speak to anyone.

I asked if there was anyway that I could pass on feedback to management about the struggling/lack of service being provided as it needs improving and I was  just told they are trying their best.

Whilst I believe the staff there are trying their best, there are obviously issues there that Torbay and North Devon don't seem to have.

I'm not sure if this is funding or staffing or both but I hope they can look at trying to resolve this.

Dear omegajp33

Thank you for your feedback. I am the Lead Nurse for services in Exeter and Barnstaple, and am grateful that you have taken the time to let us know about some of the difficulties you had accessing the Exeter service.

As we are at the start of a new University term, the Exeter clinic is always extremely busy, particularly in September and October, due to the high number of students moving into the city. During this time, our phone lines often struggle to manage the number of people who are trying to contact us.

The good news is that next month we are moving to a new electronic patient system, which includes an online appointment booking facility. We hope this will make a real difference to some of the access problems experienced in Exeter, we are aware the busy phone lines do cause problems for patients trying to contact us.

I am really glad to hear that when you attended the Barnstaple clinic the team were able to help you, and you had a really positive experience in the clinic.

Best wishes.

April

Hi omegajp33,

Just an update to the message I posted above, I wanted to let you know that we have now launched our confidential, online personal health record (PHR) system. Once you have registered, you can book non-urgent appointments for the Exeter and Barnstaple clinics online, receive messages, and results from any tests you have taken.

You can access it here: https://www.devonsexualhealth.nhs.uk/our-clinics/myphr/

It's early days with this system, and it's all very new. However, it's undergone a lot of testing, so we hope it's a real success. We plan to continue offering appointment booking by telephone for all clinics, but we hope it will begin to reduce some of the difficulties patients have had when trying to get through to us in the past, particularly in the Exeter clinic.

Best wishes,

April Brooks,

Lead Nurse
