"Getting critical life insurance forms signed"

About: Craigavon

(as the patient),

I am a cancer patient, and my recent experiences have led me to believe that there is a critical gap in our healthcare system. My insurance company contacted my doctor/consultant for necessary paperwork,my consultant has no problem with filling these forms in but my doctor whom I’ve been with this practice for years refuses to sign and sent the forms back to the insurance company . I was advised by the secretary to seek private medical notes at my own expense and even suggested finding another surgery and doctor. This treatment was not just shocking but also emotionally draining.

No one should have to navigate such hurdles when they are already grappling with serious health issues. It is essential that doctors assist their critically ill patients by completing insurance forms on their behalf, thus ensuring they receive the benefits they are entitled to without unnecessary stress.

This financial burden can be significantly reduced if doctors take responsibility for filling out insurance forms promptly and accurately.

We call upon legislators and healthcare providers alike to mandate this requirement across all health care trusts . Let's ensure that no patient has to suffer undue financial or emotional distress during an already challenging time in their lives.

Thank you reticulumqy65 for sharing your experience and raising a very important matter through Care Opinion. I am sorry to learn of the distress caused at such a difficult time for you and your family. As you mention it is important these matters are raised and leaders are away of the challenges people have to navigate following a cancer diagnosis.

The PHA is responsible for implementation of Care Opinion in NI and in the absence of a specific GP surgery identified I would be keen to share your anonymous story using a number of mechanisms:-

- Regional forum which support the Cancer strategy for NI

- Links with Cancer charities who support patients with a cancer diagnosis

-Include in the analysis shared with leaders in primary care

Through sharing your story you will have informed these various forums of a particular challenge and I will seek to understand how this may be addressed. Thank you for taking the time to raise this with us, seeking to change experiences for others. I know these may be challenging days for you and I trust in your care and treatment, going forward, you will experience support to navigate the system
