"Ambulatory day care unit"

About: Shepton Mallet Community Hospital

I was seen at this hospital in the Ambulatory day case unit for an intravenous infusion of anti-viral medication for the treatment of a Covid infection.

The staff went above and beyond what was expected.

They were extremely proficient and were offering me a service outside of their normal operating hours. The nurse-in-charge told me that they were opening on a Sunday because they didn’t have enough slots to get me seen Monday - Friday. ( this treatment must be administered within 5 days of a positive covid test).

My appointment was 10 o’clock, but I was early. I followed the instructions to come to the staff entrance, was greeted by nurse in charge shown to a private room and my treatment organised.

Despite the poor quality of the building, in which this unit is housed (porter cabin smelled of damp) the care I received was exemplary. My nurse was knowledgeable, reassuring, extremely competent. I would not hesitate to highly recommend anyone offered this service to use it.

My intravenous cannula was quickly sited by my nurse, and was not painful.

The infusion was easy and all was completed in about 40 minutes.

The staff kindly allowed me to stay in the room to wait for my lift home. Otherwise I would have had to sit in the rain.

Overall, and finally, I should like to commend these staff. I could not praise them more highly. They go above and beyond what is necessary, in order to provide an Outstanding service to the population of Somerset.

Thank you very much.
