"Can't believe the way he's been treated"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / General Medicine (Wards 5 & 8)

(as a relative),

My grandson was in A&E recently - admitted with sickness/diarrohea - to holding ward in basement, being tested to find cause.

We found there was a lack of nursing care, [except for one member of staff] different doctor every day. Confined to room as had to be near toilet because of his symptoms, TV not working, blind broken, couldn't pull it down at night.

After 7 days doctor told him he could go home either on Wednesday or Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon nurse came in to say he was being moved to Ward 5, needless to say he was very distressed. The nurse got the doctor to come in, didn't say what they were or where they'd come from, had mask apron and gloves on, nurses never had these on.

The doctor apologised for the lack of communication. Taken up to ward 5 later that night. At no time did anyone tell him his condition or expected outcome. On discharge was told doctor would give him sick line, then told he would have to come back on Monday for it as they didn't have stamp needed.

Whilst in holding ward he was supposed to get Steroid IV at 5a.m. When nurse came in on day shift, he told them he hadn't got it, the nurse checked and said it had been signed out and signed that he'd received it, couldn't give it at that time but would bring forward the next one. What happened to that Steroid?

In my opinion, the treatment he received was an absolute shambles, apart from treatment in A&E. I've been a patient many times in Wishaw and have had the best of care, can't believe the way he's been treated. In my view, it's shameful.

Dear Anne47,

Thank you for sharing your grandson's experience in University Hospital Wishaw, A&E and General Surgery.

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms that have caused your grandson to be hospitalised. I am also sorry to hear about the issues with continuity of doctor, lack of nursing care and the room that your grandson was put into. I am unsure why the TV and blinds did not work and I can only apologise for this. We want the best for our patients and it sounds as though we have not provided this standard on this occasion. I am sorry for the confusion regarding the stamp and sick line.

It is important for us to look into all of this further as well as the missing dose of steroid that you mention as well. Could I ask that you contact Patient Affairs Wishaw who will be able to fully investigate everything and provide a personal response to you. They are contactable on the below details.

PatientAffairs.Wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Tel no 01698 366 558

I hope that your grandson is feeling better now.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
