"Total lack of empathy"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency East Surrey Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I recently had major abdominal surgery, and after being discharged I needed to attend A&E to have the surgical drain inspected due to a leak/seepage.

In the early hours of the morning, having waited several hours in A&E, I  was seen by the attending registrar, who I found to be the most unfriendly, unempathetic individual, instructing me to lie on my stomach, which I refused due to this being physically impossible and dangerous due to my surgical procedure.

I asked if they could examine the drain whilst I stood up and they told me again that I need to lie down, and to try on my side.  This was also impossible for me.
I then asked if the bed could be adjusted to allow me to sit up at a 45 degree angle, to prevent placing any pressure or to reduce tension on my stitches (running from hip to hip) and the registrar was not aware of how to operate or adjust the bed.  My husband then pointed to a remote control he saw hanging on a radiator at the foot of the bed and the nurse then proceeded to assist in adjusting the bed.
I feel the registrar showed no concern for the obvious pain and difficulty I was experiencing. I was obviously struggling to move and yet they were demanding the most inappropriate physical action from me. I feel they had no bedside manner at all and were completely unfriendly and dismissive of my concerns.
In total contrast, all other staff nurses were extremely helpful and compassionate.
